Getting into the Groove with Dash and Dot

Fourth graders got into the groove today with Dash and Dot as they worked in small groups to write algorithms for a variety of challenges.   Students rotated through different stations working together to write algorithms for each challenge.

In station 1, students were challenged to

  • move to the dog box
  • make a dog sound
  • move to the horse box
  • make a horse sound

In Station 2 students needed to complete the u-shaped maze and then code Dash or Dot to act like a Firetruck or Helicopter.

Finally, at Station 3 students moved between Box 1, the X and Box 2 at each stop creating a sound or light pattern.   It was great to see students working together, measuring the mats to help narrow in on the proper code, and helping to debug each other's code.

We ended they day by brainstorming activities we'd like to do with Dash and Dot.  The most popular requests were for student designed longer mazes and obstacle courses.   So next week, that's just what we'll be doing.

You can grab a copy of the Google Slide Presentation with each challenge here.
