Reflections after reading Pure Genius

I recently read Pure Genius by Don Wettrick and had a chance to think more deeply about my 5th grade passion projects unit.  Wettrick challenged me to rethink some of the structures I had planned for this unit.  Specifically, the role that mentors can play in developing projects.  Wettrick's focus is on middle and high school and I will be doing this with my 5th graders.  During the first trimester, I will be teaching students about blogging and using social networking to find mentors and make connections with experts in their fields of interest.  Because my students are so young, I will not be having them post on Twitter as Wettrick's students do.  My hope is that some of you will be willing to post your names and fields of interest or expertise here so that my students will have a starting point when looking for experts and mentors who are willing to talk via Skype or Google Hangouts.  My students have diverse interests and would be interested in connecting with authors, scientists, poets, engineers, film makers, designers, artists, advocates, doctors, lawyers and musicians.  They would love to talk with real people who notice problems and have ideas for solutions.  My students are innovators and could learn by connecting with other innovators in any field.  I have students fascinated with space, clothing, animals, the environment, music, health, history, Minecraft, and Legos.  My students love to code, play and compete in sports, draw, play instruments, read and solve complex problems.  If you have a passion that you are willing to share and talk with students about, I may have a student interested in connecting.  I hope my readers will be willing to share their knowledge, passions and expertise with my students. Thank you in advance!
